Stray and un-wanted cats.
There is a serious problem with stray cats in the London Borough of Redbridge as a whole but it was brought home to me recently the extent of the problem. I live on the Bungalow Estate and at the beginning of September I discovered a litter of kittens, only a few weeks old at the bottom of my garden. They were being cared for and protected by the mother, who herself was not much more than a year old. I then discovered two other young cats who were around 6 months old, born of the same mother, a total of 9 cats. Add to this a male cat who has been roaming the area for a while - probably the father - 10 cats.
I have two cats of my own, both adopted strays, who have been with us for several years. I did not want any more cats to look after but I was extremely concerned for the welfare of the kittens and the fact that the mother could easily become pregnant again in the not too distant future and some of the other 8 kittens also. The situation was already difficult but it was obvious things would soon spiral out of control with increasing numbers of stray cats in my area. I telephoned a large number of rescue organisations requesting assistance but every one of them were unable to help as they were already inundated and overwhelmed with unwanted cats and kittens they could not find homes for.
I finally found help through a lady involved with Feline Friends. She has worked tirelessly, spent many hours and travelled many miles helping people like myself improve the welfare of cats and kittens by neutering, vaccinating, nurturing and attempting to re-home stray cats and kittens in Redbridge. In talking to her I realise how dire the situation is, not only in Seven Kings and Redbridge, but nationally, all cat organisations are overwhelmed with increasing cat numbers.
Feline Friends are currently attempting to raise funds and are desperately looking for helpers. This dramatic increase in the stray cat population is a problem throughout the whole of the UK and has prompted a Parliamentary Petition to encourage the Government to take action. Link to petition; Introduce mandatory neutering of pet cats - Petitions (parliament.uk)

Bulb's welcome Spring
The planting of bulbs by local residents and the Committee during winter months has now come to fruition. Flowers from the spring bulbs are adding a welcome show of colour in our streets. Many thanks to all those who helped in organising and planting. They will hopefully reproduce and improve our street scene every year from now on and we would encourage resident's to keep a careful watch over them and do a little weeding as necessary to keep up appearances.
